WRTW Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

MOOD
For Spring Summer 2010 Creative Director Frida Giannini presents a double-faced collection that exposes both Gucci’s noble traditions as well as the House’s firm view towards the future. Using iconic elements of Gucci’s storied past as well as the most classic of wardrobe essentials—the Little Black Dress—as a launching point, Giannini offers her own dynamic and coherent vision of modern femininity. Shot with the adrenaline of extreme sports and their technical details, these classics have been reborn and contemporized, emphasizing the dual forces of tradition and innovation. The collection is unapologetically confident and resolutely sexy in its mood, yet grounded in the complex workmanship techniques and impeccable craftsmanship for which the House of Gucci is known.

SILHOUETTE
A body conscious silhouette runs throughout the collection, underscored by curved seams, anatomical cuts and taut lines. The key piece is the short, figure-hugging dress deciphered in a new, sexy athleticism and not-only-black variations. The dresses, as well as slim pants and precious python or leather jackets, have been carved into, leaving slices of skin exposed. Straps and jewel-like harnesses featuring intricate metal embroideries cage in compact dresses, knit tops and jackets, underscoring the focus on the body and adding a subversive touch. The new suit is a buckled jacket with a zippered pencil skirt or tight pant. Also noteworthy are a super high-waisted, slim pant and featherweight, mesh-lined leather bombers. Gucci’s famed horsebit, reinterpreted as a mechanical cord belt, cinches the chest or waist, while elements of extreme sports—latches, cinch pulleys, technical clasps, and vertical panels of looped cords, are rendered in total luxury.

PRINT AND MATERIAL
Nearly every garment offers an elaborate collage of contrasting materials. Precious perforated leathers are patched together with technically treated silks, wools or cottons. Mesh or nylon inserts are cut into the waists and backs of dresses or sleeves of jackets while rubber piping, metal buckles, carbon fiber and geometric constructions contribute to the collection’s sport undertone. The bold patterns of traditional ikat prints gives a highly graphic edge to the collection while their meticulous workmanship underscores Gucci’s technical excellence. One ikat pattern is entirely crafted from micro-strips of woven leather while another features sliced printed fabric reapplied as an embroidery. A silk jacquard has been lacquered and polished for a chinz effect. Black crepe de chine, featured on the reverse side of the dresses, acts as a visual opponent to the brilliant front shots of cobalt blue, reflector orange and magenta. Crisp whites and shades of grey complete this strong, feminine palette.

EVENING
The concept is enlivened and illuminated for evening when the jewel-like harnesses become more precious with large crystals and black metal beading. Sharp cocktail tuxedos, slashed through the legs and with open jacket backs, have a dangerous air, as do black silk jersey columns with sexy cut-outs. The double-faced little black dress continues its evolution with short grey and black dresses in techno-crepe de chine featuring knife-thin metal embroidery, and with body skimming dresses caged within metal and crystal embroideries that have a touch of rock n’ roll.

ACCESSORIES
A combustion of House tradition and cutting edge techniques leads to a rich and luxurious variety of accessories. Gucci’s famed Bamboo bag, first introduced in the late 1940s, is reborn as the New-Bamboo with a leather-wound handle, new shoulder strap and innovative materials such as stoned pigskin, stoned crocodile, and bonded neoprene GG. Crocodile, the noblest of Gucci’s historic skins, has undergone a radical transformation – fading from a smoked, opaque surface to a hand-polished brilliance in a web effect on flat clutches or oversized bags. The mechanical horsebit cinched with ropes of braided leather has become a key feature on the handbag handles. Metal embroidery appears on white calfskin handbags, silver rope necklaces, and on evening platform sandals that climb up the ankle. Platform shoes, grab the ankle with a buckle while a spliced knee-high boot dramatically spirals up the calf.

defaultBra Makeovers with Jene Luciani on NBC New York

Posted on 21st February, 2010 | No Comment

So, I’ve been signing books everywhere from Bloomies to Neiman’s… and each event, has had no shortage of interesting people. For example, at Lord and Taylor 5th avenue, I shared signing space with the legendary Tino Martinez. And at Neiman Marcus White Plains? None other than World Series champ NY Yankee Joba Chamberlain, who received a copy of The Bra Book for his sister.

At my Lord and Taylor 5th Avenue book signing for the Fashion Forms version of The Bra Book recently, I ran into The View’s Sherri Shepherd, who was signing copies of HER new book “Permission Slips.”

We each traded signed copies of our books, and she graciously wrote in mine that she really “needs” a book like The Bra Book. She is an inspiration to all women. Love her!!

So, just like most of you, whether you will admit it or not, I love the Real Housewives, especially my gals right here in the big apple (although they have yet to have one from the ‘burbs - hellooooo Bravo!?! I’m available! :)) I ESPECIALLY love Alex McCord, who I first “got to know” via Twitter, when I learned of her new gig as Creative Director of the super cool chain of vintage shops (2 in Fairfield County) called Second Time Around.

Alex, no stranger to bras as a former employee of Victoria’s Secret, graciously agreed to read and review The Bra Book for me. Here is what she said:

“This book is a great answer to many of the questions women of all ages may ask themselves about bras and what goes in them. Jené offers a witty and compassionate guide, with much more comprehensive info than you’d ever hear from your average bra fitter or female relative!”

Thanks Alex!! Beauty and the ‘burbs can’t wait for the upcoming season, beginning in March.

Carlos Miele was my FAVORITE by far, a bright light in an otherwise doldrum final season in the tents at Bryant Park. Based on what I saw on the runways, here’s what you should hang onto for NEXT fall/winter:

- Blazers
- Bold shoulders
- Vibrant colors (purple, red, turquoise)
- Fur vests
- Metallics
- Over the knee boots
- Ladylike croc bags
- Trenches
- Leather
- Wedges

The Inside Scoop….

Designer Tory Burch recently feted her friend Amy Astley’s new tome The Teen Vogue Handbook: An Insider’s Guide to Fashion (Razorbill, 2009), with a signing party at Burch’s Greenwich Avenue store. In the book, The Teen Vogue editor-in-chief (and Anna Wintour protégé) shares the stories of famous fashion designers like Burch, and how they got their start in the business. While the stories serve as inspiration for young women and teen girls, I had to get the scoop on Burch’s inspiration for her forthcoming spring line. “The line was inspired by [the American photographer] William Eggleston and his quirky take on America,” says Burch. “We are always trying to do American classics that have an edge like denim and leather and make them unique and different.” One standout piece to look for this spring? A pair of tie-dyed leather shorts.

Lam’s Looks…

Fashion designer Derek Lam is perhaps best known for his use of pretty fabrics and prints, juxtaposed by geometric silhouettes, like a bold one-shoulder romper. It’s easy to see why his creations fly off the racks at NEIMAN MARCUS in White Plains. I sat down with Lam for a sneak preview of his spring line, which featured a “transforming” pair of pants with a removable corset-waist. “For me, spring is about mixing colors and prints, and to not to be afraid of that,” says the designer. I love mixing soft dusty pastels like pale turquoise with pale pink, to give the outfit a bit of an edge. Or, pair some of these fabulous jewel tones [we are seeing] like hot pink and yellow with black. But be sure when mixing and matching to keep the pieces soft, and not tailored.”
